This photocopiable resource book uses a range of stories from School Journals to support learning and teaching about close reading, exploring language and thinking critically at Level 2. The book is based on Chapter 6: Close Reading 'Learner as a Reader' (Ministry of Education). There are three units in the book. These are: fantasy (with a focus on descriptive language); animal narratives (with a focus on story structure); and humour (with a focus on retelling and sequencing). Each unit contains a summary of expected learning outcomes, a teacher overview, references to the School Journal stories used, teacher ideas for introducing the close reading activities, and a set of student worksheets.
