Most juniors understand the shape and movement of a story. This is reinforced through film and television, and also when they recount events or personal experiences. However, the range of reading for meaning skills necessary for understanding non-fiction texts are more complex and can be less well developed in many children. This book assists junior students to develop the skills necessary for accessing information from a range of non-fiction texts. The book covers these areas: labels and titles; non-fiction books in the library; contents pages; captions; alphabetical order; sequencing; following instructions; dictionaries; and flow diagrams. Each unit of work has three student activity pages. All units are supported by teacher notes that contain the objective of each activity, approaches to setting up the activity, and suggestions for developing the skills further.
